Join the movement towards iPSCs! An ethical and scalable alternative to animal testing in drug discovery. Recent legislation in Maryland and a shortage of research macaques in the US highlight the push towards alternative methods and reducing reliance on animal testing. At Ncardia we facilitate the efficient integration of iPSCs to bring human biology early in drug discovery and help reducing the number of animals in later stages. With regulatory support from the FDA, iPSCs are becoming a vital tool in the drug discovery pipeline. Want to learn more about the potential of iPSCs? Where do we stand in the promotion and uptake of non-animal methods and approaches in science and regulation? Can we assess chemical safety without animal testing? The European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) have been instrumental in moving us closer. They just published their 2023 report!Among the highlights are:New in vitro methods under consideration for regulatory application, including methods to identify chemicals that can potentially disrupt the thyroid hormone system, causing a range of serious health effects in humans and wildlife, and chemicals that interfere with male sex hormones, with potential adverse health effects such as reproductive impairment.A virtual reality application for education in schools.New partnerships with realities that research innovative non-animal approaches, like ONTOX RISK-HUNT3R, PrecisionTox, and European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC)Read a summary of the report ⤵ https://europa.eu/!7XRnCv#Science4Policy #toxicology #ECVAM #NAMs #innovation

At our laboratory, samples of three unrelated horses with submandibular abscesses were found negative for S. equi, and further testing proved the presence of another genus. This raised the question for the exact identity of this pathogen and whether these isolates were epidemiologically related and it warranted further characterization with regards of virulence and resistance factors. A recent study by GD experts Linda van den Wollenberg, Kees van Maanen, Rianne Buter and Erik van Engelen, P. Janszen (Equine Clinic De Raaphorst) and F. Rey (Veterinary Clinic Winsum) shows the identification and whole genome sequencing of three A. denticolens isolates originating from submandibular abscesses of unrelated horses. In addition, high genetic variability between the different isolates and the low presence of known virulence and antibiotic resistance genes were demonstrated. Do you understand pathology and laboratory medicine as well as you would like to? Do you feel confident handling patient samples, running in house tests, evaluating a blood smear or a urine sediment, identifying parasite ova, trouble-shooting errors in your chemistry analyzer, or answering client questions about recommended tests? If your answer is no, you are not alone! And yet, pathology and laboratory medicine form the foundation of medicine, informing and guiding so much of clinical decision making. That's what inspired the pathologists of SVP to create this program - VOLT was developed for vet techs, by pathologists: let us help you totally own your pathology!!
