Warning: This page contains spoilers for the February 22, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category People & Places) for Wednesday, February 22, 2023 (Season 39, Game 118):

Thought to descend from people of Southeast Asia, the Chamorro make up this U.S. territory’s largest ethnic group

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sreekar Madabushi, a junior at the Georgia Institute of Technology from Basking Ridge, New Jersey
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, February 22, 2023 (1)
Autumn Shelton, a junior at Princeton University from Lamar, Missouri
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, February 22, 2023 (2)
Stephanie Pierson, a junior at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from Macon, Georgia
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, February 22, 2023 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today is quarterfinal #3 of the High School Reunion Tournament. The first two games have been won by the players who advanced the farthest in their respective tournaments. If that holds, that would mean Autumn Shelton, who was a semifinalist in 2018, is the favorite to advance. The prediction model does think that Sreekar is a very strong player, though, and actually favors Sreekar very slightly today. I’m expecting to see a very tightly-contested matchup today.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The Chamorro people are believed to have arrived in the Marianas Islands, including Guam, c. 2000 B.C.; While both are now U.S. territories, Guam and the rest of the Northern Mariana Islands are separate territories due to Spain ceding the areas to different countries at the end of the 19th century; Guam went to the U.S. while the Northern Mariana Islands went to Germany (and then Japan after World War I). The rift between the islands caused by the Japanese occupation, especially during World War II, is one major reason why they have yet to reunify.

“But Andy, why are the Northern Mariana Islands not also a correct response to this clue if the Chamorro is also a major group on the Northern Mariana Islands?”, you may ask. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the largest ethnic group in the Northern Mariana Islands is not Chamorro (12,001), but Filipino (15,456). Meanwhile, on the U.S. territory of Guam, the largest ethnic group is Chamorro, with 32% of the total island population being Chamorro, compared to 29.1% Filipino.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: European Cities; Who Played ‘Em?; Have A Nosh; Science Critters; Welcome Back!; It’s Great To “Cu”)

Sreekar had the best opening round; the only clue after which he didn’t hold the lead was clue #2. (Autumn got clue #2 correct.) His bet of $3,000 on the first Daily Double led to some regret, openly wishing he’d bet more. He had a commanding lead after 30 clues, though.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Sreekar 8 correct 0 incorrect
Autumn 5 correct 0 incorrect
Stephanie 2 correct 1 incorrect

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Sreekar 13 correct 1 incorrect
Autumn 9 correct 1 incorrect
Stephanie 8 correct 2 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Colleges & Universities; Travel Facts; The Presidential Victor; TV Switcheroo; Literary Movements; A Jolly Rhyme)

Double Jeopardy! was interesting! Sreekar got the Daily Double correct, betting $7,000, but then ceded control to Stephanie, who doubled up on hers to bring herself close to breaking Sreekar’s runaway. By the end of Double Jeopardy!, an incorrect response in TV SWITCHEROO from Sreekar, rebounded by Stephanie, meant that everything was still to play for in Final! Scores going into Final were Sreekar at $25,800, Stephanie at $14,400, and Autumn at $4,200.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Sreekar 23 correct 3 incorrect
Stephanie 15 correct 4 incorrect
Autumn 12 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 16 (0 today).

Stephanie was the only player correct in Final Jeopardy! today and she bet just enough to overtake Sreekar’s final score by $2! A dramatic win as Stephanie Pierson is the 3rd semifinalist!

Today’s interviews:

Sreekar is looking for a job in robotics and AI.
Autumn got to watch her appearance on a movie screen.
Stephanie wants to be a park ranger.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Between this and his last tournament performance, Sreekar has to be one of the unluckiest players ever. (Had he advanced out of the quarters, the prediction model likely would have favored Sreekar to win at this point in the tournament.)
  • Today’s box score: February 22, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Sreekar $25,800 Stephanie $14,400 Autumn $4,200)

Stephanie: If Sreekar is incorrect, he falls to $22,799. Therefore, you should bet at least $8,401. (Actual bet: $8,401)

Autumn: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $200)

Sreekar: Standard cover bet over Stephanie is $3,001. (Actual bet: $3,001)
