Palm Sunday, Holy Week, Easter Services Are Listed - Times Leader (2024)

Holy Week begins today for Christians. There are many services taking place throughout town this week. Please read on for all of the details.

The Rev. Michael Shambora and the congregation of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave., invite the community to their Holy Week and Easter services.

Today, palms will be distributed during the 9:45 a.m. service.

On Holy Thursday, they will have their annual Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St., Avoca.

On Good Friday, the congregation will participate in the Good Friday services at the Langcliffe Presbyterian Church, 1001 Main St., Avoca, from 12-3 p.m. For detailed information about this service please read a full description of it in the Avoca News.

On Easter Sunday, they will celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus at 9:45 a.m.

The Rev. Dr. Al Cremard and the congregation of the Independent Bible Church, 328 Main St., invite the community to their Holy Week and Easter services.

At 6 p.m. today, the Independent Bible Church’s adult choir will present the Easter Cantata “Lift Him Up.” This is an original Easter musical by Ron and Shelly Hamilton with eight selections of music and four actors presented in a reader’s theater format.

On Good Friday, the Calvary Bible Church, Centre Hall, Pa., will present the play “The Last Supper” at 7 p.m. The play centers on the classic work of Leonardo da Vinci and will present the testimony of each disciple in the painting. The play will be presented in three acts: Act I – The Twelve Disciples’ Testimonies; Act II – The Lord’s Supper; and Act III – The Centurion.

On Easter, there will be a sunrise service at 6 a.m., Sunday school at 9:15 a.m., a morning worship service at 10:30 a.m., and a Sunday evening service at 6 p.m.

The Rev. Charles Rokosz, the Rev. Joseph G. Elston, and the parishioners of Nativity of Our Lord Parish invite the community to their Holy Week and Easter services.

On Palm Sunday, palms will be blessed and distributed at the following Masses: 8, 9:30, and 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, 127 Stephenson St., and at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 529 Stephenson St. There will also be a special presentation of the Living Stations at 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church by the 8th grade class of Holy Rosary School.

On Holy Thursday, there will be a Mass at 7 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church for those individuals who are unable to attend evening Mass. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated at 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church. Holy Rosary Church and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church will remain open until 10 p.m. for Eucharistic Adoration.

On Good Friday, there will be a celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. The Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church.

On Holy Saturday, food baskets will be blessed at 2 and 4 p.m. in the Holy Rosary School Gymnasium, and there will be an Easter Vigil Mass at 8 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church.

On Easter Sunday, there will be Masses at 8, 9:30, and 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, and at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation will be available at Holy Rosary Church Wednesday, April 20 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Good Friday from 10-11 a.m.; and Holy Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

The Rev. Carmen Bolock and the parishioners of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, 200 Stephenson St., invite the community to their Holy Week and Easter services.

Today, they will have a blessing of palms and procession at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Palms will also be blessed and distributed at the High Mass at 11 a.m.

On Holy Thursday, Father Bolock will celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7 p.m. followed by the procession to the repository and the stripping of the altar. The church will be open until 11 p.m. for private prayer.

On Good Friday, the church will be open from 3-10 p.m. for private prayer. There will be a special Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

On Holy Saturday, there will be the blessing of fire, paschal candle, and water service at 10:30 a.m. Father Bolock will also bless Easter food following the 10:30 a.m. service and again at 2 p.m.

On Easter, the parish will have an outdoor Resurrection procession (weather permitting) followed by the Mass of the Resurrection and blessing of Easter food at 6 a.m. They will also have a High Mass at 10 a.m. which will also include the blessing of the Easter food and benediction.

Bake Sale Today

The Ladies Adoration Society of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will have its annual Palm Sunday homemade bake sale today in the church basem*nt, 200 Stephenson St., following the 8:30 and 11 a.m. Masses.

Blue & Gold Banquet

Duryea Cub Scout Pack 375 will have its 21st annual Blue and Gold banquet today at 1 p.m. at the V.F.W. Post 1227, 492 Stephenson St. Following the dinner, there will be a monetary drawing sponsored by the National Slovak Society Leaf 75 of Duryea (NSS). NNS President Gary Edwards and NSS Vice President Lucy Piccoletti, who are also members of the Cub Scout Pack committee, will conduct the drawing. In addition to the drawing, there will also be a Chinese auction.

Crime Watch Meeting

The Duryea Neighborhood Crime Watch will have its monthly meeting Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St. The public is invited.

Senior Outreach

The Duryea Outreach Program for Seniors and Caregivers will meet Wednesday, April 20 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St.

Pizza Sale Friday

The Germania Hose Company’s Scuba Team will have its final Lenten pizza sale Friday, April 22 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the hose company, 430 Foote Ave. The pizzas are 12-cut trays and are available in red or white varieties. The cost is $11 per tray. To place an advance order, call 451-3750 on the sale day.

Easter Party

The Duryea Rec Board will sponsor an Easter party Saturday, April 23 from 1-3 p.m. at the Healey Memorial Playground, corner of Foote Avenue and Wright Street. The festivities will include a DJ, refreshments, a visit from the Easter Bunny, and so much more. To register, please call Trina Moss at 604-0637. Please note registration is encouraged but not required.

Wildcats Sign-ups

The Duryea Wildcats will have early sign-up sessions April 27 and May 11 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Duryea Sports Complex, corner of Kramer and Shaft Streets. All participants must submit their birth certificate, two proofs of residency, a photo, and medical clearance from a doctor to play. The registration fee is $60 and 20 tickets for a single family and $60 and 25 tickets for a family of two or more. Returning players who have not returned their uniforms are asked to do so at this time.

Ziti Dinner

The members of the Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 will have their annual ziti dinner Saturday, April 30 from 5-8 p.m. at the post home 329 Main St. Takeouts will be available from 3-5 p.m. Tickets, which can be purchased at the post home, are $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children. They will also have raffle tickets for several prizes for $1 each.

Sons of Legion

The Sons of the American Legion (S.A.L.S.), Squadron 585, will meet Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. at the post home, 329 Main St. The nomination of officers will take place at this meeting. The offices available for nomination are commander, senior vice-commander, junior vice-commander, historian, and sergeant at arms. Any S.A.L.S member in good standing may run for these offices.
