Prescriptions

Do I need a current prescription from my eye doctor to order contacts?

Yes. You need a current prescription from your eye doctor to order contact lenses. We can get your prescription information in one of two ways:

  • You can provide us with a copy of your written prescription from your eye doctor, or

  • We can confirm your prescription information directly with your eye doctor.

Do I still need a prescription if I just want contacts to change my eye color?

Yes, you still need to be fitted for the lenses even if you don't need vision correction. This is because contact lenses are medical devices and wearing them can affect the health of your eyes.

Is a contact lens prescription different than a glasses prescription?

Yes. When you order contact lenses, you must have a current contact lens prescription which specifies the power of the lenses, the size of the lens, the type and brand of lens. See also,How to read a contact lens prescription.

What if my prescription options aren’t listed?

We support a wide range of prescription options online, but if your unique prescription isn't an option, please visit us at your local club where we support a wide range of specialty options.

How does the Federal Law "Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers" Act affect me?

How to read my prescription?

Here are some terms commonly foundon prescriptions forglasses:

OD: This abbreviation stands for “oculus dexter,” which is “right eye” in Latin.

OS: This abbreviation stands for “oculus sinister,” which is “left eye” in Latin.

Sphere (SPH): Sphere indicates how strong your lenses need to be. This will be accompanied by a plus (+) or minus (-), which indicates whether you’re farsighted or nearsighted.

Cylinder (CYL): Cylinder is the correction for astigmatism. Astigmatism (thanks for asking!) means that the shape of your cornea prevents you from seeing with perfect sharpness. If you have a cylinder included on your contact lens prescription, that usually means you wear toric lenses.

ADD: This is used when you require a prescription for both distance and reading in your glasses or contact lenses. It can be shown as an ADD value with a plus (+) sign with a number or, for certain contact lens brands, a description like "high" or "low." An ADD indicates that you may need progressive or multifocal lenses.

How do I order if I don't have a copy of my prescription?

If you don't have a copy of your prescription, we can confirm your prescription directly with your eye doctor before processing your contact lens order. You will need to provide us with your doctor's name and phone number during checkout.

What do I need to order prescription frames or lenses?

If ordering prescription items, you’ll need to have a prescription specific to the item you’ve selected. (A prescription for contact lenses cannot be used for glasses and vice versa.) Here are a few more specifics for each order type:

Prescription glasses or sunglasses: You’ll need a valid eyeglasses prescription (meaning it’s not for contacts, hasn’t expired, and with all values visible) and your pupillary distance (PD). Your PD is the distance in millimeters between your pupils and helps us center your prescription correctly in your frames.

If your doctor did not include your PD on your prescription, you can measure it using our online tool in the Sam's Club app. You can also stop by any of our retail stores where our trained associates can measure your pupillary distance (PD).

Where can I review the prescription I uploaded in my order?

The prescription details is shown on the review screen before checkout but once the order is placed, it won't show any details about the Rx details. Once order is placed, there's no way to add or change prescription. Rx orders will not go through unless Rx info has been entered.

  • Lenses shouldn’t extend past the side of your face

  • Eyebrows should not be inside the glasses

  • When you smile, your cheeks don’t push the frames up

  • Frames shouldn’t slide down your nose

Above all, pick what makes you look and feel good! Learn more about finding a good fit. We also have a team of personal opticians ready to help you find the perfect pair at your local club.
