MERRILLVILLE — Following a military procession from Chicago Monday night, memorial and funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Brandon Lee Fassoth, 27, of Merrillville, who died recently while on active duty.
Fassoth, who died June 18, was born in Hammond and graduated in 2015 from Merrillville High School before joining the Indiana Army National Guard, according to his obituary.
He completed his training as an infantryman in 2015 and was assigned to the 2-151 Infantry Regiment at the United States Army Training Center Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and United States Army Center for Initial Military Training, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

During the rest of the ride to jail, the accused threatened violence against the trooper and his family, and claimed she was related to several Chicago police officers, according to ISP.
"Our deepest, heartfelt and sincere condolences go out to family, friends, loved ones and peers of Staff Sgt. Brandon Fassoth," a public affairs official with the Indiana National Guard said Tuesday morning. "The loss of a fellow service member affects us all, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our former Hoosier Guardsmen."

"Brandon loved being an infantryman, training and mentoring soldiers, and all aspects of being a soldier in the U.S. Army," according to his obituary. "Brandon enjoyed hiking, reading, and spending time with his cat, Fireball."
Fassoth was returned to the area Monday night in a military funeral procession from Chicago O'Hare International Airport to the Calumet Park Funeral Chapel in Merrillville, according to a traffic alert posted by the town of Dyer.
The procession was accompanied locally by various police, fire and EMA agencies, as well as motorcycle clubs, the town reported.

"Brandon was an inspiration, a friend, and had the biggest heart," according to his obituary.
"He traveled the country seeking new hiking adventures and off-the-beaten-path locations to photograph," the obituary says. "He loved being in the company of family and friends, sharing conversations and laughs."
Fassoth reportedly completed several schools during his time in the military, including Air Assault and Joint Forces Leader Development.
"Brandon was passionate about physical fitness and could always be found in a gym," according to his obituary. "He did not believe in limits and set personal goals in weightlifting that he always managed to achieve through dedication and hard work. No physical challenge was too much, and he was always inspiring others to help them achieve their goals."
He is survived by several immediate family members.
A memorial service and funeral will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Calumet Park Funeral Chapel in Merrillville.
